Why can't I sleep without antipsychotic medication?
I take Geodon for manic depression. The problem is that I can’t sleep for a second without it. But Geodon does not cause sedation. Actually one of the side effects is insomnia. Still, I need Geodon to sleep. Why?

I have the very same problem… I started out taking 80mg of Geodon every day. The doctor reduced me to 60mg then 40 mg. Since then I have stop seeing my doctor and waiting on the VA to call me for induction to their medical treatment. I have been on the last refill and only taking 40mgs EVERY other day. I noticed on the nights I don’t take it I stay up til 2am. And the next day I will be very irritable. On the nights I do take it I go to sleep around 8 pm. When I did take it I noticed I had to take it at 6:00 pm. If I took it any earlier I was anxious. Any later and I couldn’t go to sleep until later then I would be tired the next day. One thing about it is I allot of bad dreams or allot of times I wake up cause I know its a dream. So I don’t sleep well. But it does seem to make me think clearly.

i wont take that trash.my doctor tried that sshit on me and I told him i need benzos.when he refused i told him to ffuck off and walked out of his office.I only take what works.now it looks like i will go back to drinking.i wont take that ant psy shit and suffer with side effects anymore!!!!!!!!!!.

March 7th, 2010 at 2:13 pmI take Geodon for major depression. I have so much trouble sleeping anyway, so the Geodon doesn’t seem to bother that. But, my doctor did say to take it at night at bedtime. Talk to your doctor about changing dosage.
March 7th, 2010 at 2:13 pmdifferent medications work differently on different people. ritalin is a stimulant, but is used to calm down hyperactive children. although your medication is not a sedative, it does bring you out of your depression, which probably gives you the peace of mind to sleep.

Have you ever read the package insert? Even the experts can’t explain how some of these meds work. Just be glad it works for you. Call a pharmacist during the off hours and see if they have a theory. Every brain reacts differently to meds. Look at the ADD/ADHD kids who take Ritalin to calm down. Many people swear by a cup of coffee. If they don’t have the coffee, they can’t fall asleep. Hope your bipolar isn’t wrecking things for you. Best of luck!

March 7th, 2010 at 2:13 pmMany meds affect different people in many different ways. Geodon may cause insomnia in some but obviously not you. Since you need it for the manic depression then continue to take it and if it helps you to sleep …BONUS. Maybe because it’s an antipsychotic it’s keeping your mind on an even keel and if your mind is calmer then you’re more likely to be able to sleep better. My son takes Seroquel(quetiapine), an antipsychotic, and it helps him sleep.

The shorter your doctor’s visit the sooner he can see his next patient and make more money. You need to read all the prescribing information for this medication. It can be found in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) there is an on-line version. Chances are your doctor will hide this information from you.

Take the print ouut into the doctor’s office with a list of questions and watch how easily the doctor gets frustrated.
I was on Geodon also and had the same effect. It can block a transmitter in your brain that causes you to get the signal for sleep. Seroquil is alot like that too. They are hard to get off of, you arnt suppost to Just stop them, you have to ween yourself because of their potency. Medications are serious stuff, and alot of people dont really take their possible side effects seriously. Always be aware and do your homework before starting, or stopping or combining meds.. they pdocs dont always notice, or care about these things when they perscribe them…sadly. they just give you another pill to counteract the other effects… I mixed a Caffine pill with my geodon once, and ended up in the ER with taccacardia, and could have died.
