For treatment of ideopathic insomnia, what are your experiences using various drugs to treat this problem?

My insomnia is of an odd variety and isn’t something that can be helped by behavioral changes, and so forth. Although I have been having success with ambien, my sleep doctor wants to switch it up. He would like to try trazodone, which is typically used as an antidepressant. I am fortunate to not be depressed,so I would be interested in trying one of the other insomnia meds, instead. What have been your experiences on the effectiveness, side-effects, etc. of ambien, lunesta, sonata, rozerem and/or trazodone? Are there any I am missing? Valerian, melatonin, tryptophan and other "natural" substances have not worked for me. Due to another medical problems, I can’t load myself up on antihistamines. Thank you.
