Insomnia and depression?

I have just been diagnosed with insomnia and depression. My insomnia came first and then, after a month, led to depression. My doctor has prescribed medication to help me sleep and an anti depressant, but I’m wondering if I shouldn’t do have some counseling as well. I mentioned it to my doctor and he said it was up to me. I’ve never experience depression before (except the baby blues right after I had my daughter), so I don’t know if it will do any good. Does it seem to help with insomnia/depression that was triggered by extremely stressful life events? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I don’t want to spend the rest of my life on medications if I can help it. I really resisted the anti depressants, but the doctor and my pharmacist convinced me that I needed them. I don’t mind counseling at all. I just didn’t want to waste their time if my brain just needed a "reboot."
I was given Trazodone and Celexa.

    Counseling is the answer. Most of the time, the causes of psychological conditions like depression are not biological: so medication is only a temporary fix. Counseling can help you get to the root of the problem and you can figure out better ways to handle the stress in your life. This will prevent your insomnia and depression from returning. Good luck! And remember, most people feel better after just a few visits to a counselor. Asking for help doesn’t mean you have to spend the rest of your life in therapy.

    Some antidepressants such as the sedating tricyclics, trazodone and mirtazapine can help with depression and insomnia, but they can make you feel tired during the day.
