Can anyone help me with information about Effexor?

I’ve tried a few other anti-depressants like Zoloft and Escitalopram. I went to the doctor and he has reccommended Effexor.

For the last couple of days i’ve been easing myself into Effexor on 37.5mg once daily. The others I tried had bad side effects (Zoloft made me rage, Escitalopram made me ill)

After 1 week I will move up to 75mg once daily.

I have felt quite unwell the last couple of days, I have had insomnia and lack of appetite. Is this normal? Does it go away? Or should I tell my doctor to get me off it?

Welcome to the medication merry-go-round. It took five goes to find the anti-depressant that didn’t make me feel nauseous, dizzy, shaky, have panic attacks, and God knows what else.
As unpleasant as side-effects are, if you really need the medication then you have to stay on it for at least a few weeks to see if they wear off. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Effexor was the first med they tried me on, and it made me high as a kite but had no anti-depressant effect whatsoever. Then we tried Cipromil (spelling?), Zoloft, Lexapro, and finally Prozac, which is where I am now. I was also on Valpro (I’m bipolar, so needed mood stabiliser) for fifteen months, but the side-effects never went away so I’ve weaned myself off of those. Ever had a headache for fifteen months straight? Ugh.
Everyone’s experience with meds is different, and it really is just a case of trial and error, unfortunately.
Also, don’t forget that anti-depressants aren’t your only option as far as treatment goes. Things like a good diet/nutritional supplements, gentle exercise, stress management, etc, go a long way towards making you feel better too. Don’t rely on just the meds to get better. If you don’t change anything else in your life, even if you do get better this time, it’s not likely to last. They say the definition of insanity is to do the same things over and over again and expect a different result.
Try and see depression as a wake-up call - something needs to change.
I wish you the very best of luck, and a quick and lasting recovery :)

The only diagnosis I would take effexor for is panic disorder. My dad takes it and it does cause insomnia, nervousness, and other unpleasant side effects. Of course, there’s a chance that it is a worthwhile drug for you, but I would never take it. Some better drugs for depression would be celexa and lamictal. Even for panic disorder, i would take klonopin over effexor (unless your old). Furthermore, it’s very hard to get off of effexor. Just go to "askapatient.com and see for yourself. Well, Good luck to you, I hope this helps.
