Insomnia - driving me crazy!?

I take several medications at night that are "supposed" to put me to sleep. I take a combination of benedryl, seroquel, amitriptyline, clonidine, and trazadone. However, I still can’t sleep, and I rarely get more than 5 hours a night. Is there anything else I can take that would actually work? Over-the-counter stuff doesn’t make a difference (I usually take 7 benedryl over the course of a few hours, and nothing…), and I’ve tried ambien (which also didn’t work). Because of the meds I’m already on, my doctors are hesitant to give me anything else. I’ve also taken lorazepam and clonazepam, but I get nothing from those, either.

Ideas?
~ Actually, I can’t stop taking them for 3 days. I’d go absolutely crazy (seriously, with that many psych meds, I wouldn’t be fit to be around, and I wouldn’t sleep at all).
~ I’m not dependent on the medications. Been there, done that. There is a difference between needing a medication and being dependent on one. And yes, the amount of benedryl I take is insane, that’s why I’m asking here. Thanks for the input.
~ I should mention, too, that I work graveyard shift, 9:30 pm to 6 am, so my sleep schedule is already out of whack. I never had so much trouble going to sleep when I worked second shift. This has been a recent change, which is, no doubt, why I’m having such a hard time adjusting.

Perhaps you can find some useful tips in a web search for "natural insomnia remedies".

Try taking no drugs at all for 72 hours.

I know it’ll be tough to do as many as you’re taking, but if you can suffer through three days, then you should be able to sleep. If not, then that Trazadone alone should do the trick. It has for me when I needed it.

Good luck, my friend! I know it’s tough!

I too suffer from insomnia. I’m currently breastfeeding so all drugs are a no go! I have a hypnosis CD that I use. If nothing else I get an hour’s guided meditation/hypnosis during which I am completely relaxed. But I agree with the other response - give the cocktail a miss and let your body find a rhythm.

Im no doctor but those are alot of medications you taking at once, 7 benedryl over the course of just a few hours thats insane! It sounds to me like you may have grown dependent to one or all of these drugs. If your primary doctor isnt doing much for you, get a second opinion. Or try some of these DRUG FREE at home remedies.
    1) Try VALERIAN a herb that can improve the quality of your sleep.
    2) Eat your PROTIEN at breakfast and lunch, eat a light dinner. Your body will have trouble digesting a heavy protien filled dinner, thus making it harder to get to sleep.
    3) Cut out caffeine after 2:00p.m.,and refrain from drinking alcohol 3 hours before bed.
    4) Drink 8 to 10 ounces of water every day.
    5) Regular exercises, walk 6 blocks a day at a normal pace.
    6) Take no longer than a 15 minute nap a day.
    7) Go to bed only when your sleepy, if you cant fall asleep after 20 minutes get up and read until your tierd.
    8) CREATE A SLEEP SCHEDULE AND STICK TO IT!!!!!!!!!!
I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck.

I spent 3 months on a project that had to be done during the ‘graveyard shift’ time. Even with no previous problems with sleeping it threw my sleeping habits completely off. I was either exhausted but couldn’t fall asleep or get hyper and crash an hour later, dead to the world for a few hours just so I could wake up exhausted again. Even after the end of the project it took me quite some time to be able to sleep normally.

The human body needs sleep at night. Not only for biological reasons, but for our mental health as well. Yes some people can adjust. But the amount of drugs you’re taking/have tried makes it quite clear you’re not one of them. Do consider finding a job where you can work a day shift.
