Has anyone experienced or know of the side effects of Neurontin/Gabapentin?

I am currently on Gabapentin (Neurontin) for nerve pain (1800MG/day), and 1) It’s not working, and 2) I am experiencing what I think are side effects of this drug. The only problem is that these side effects are not listed on any web sites I’ve looked at, so I’m confused.

1. Nausea (this is actually a confirmed side effect of the Rx).
2. Pain worsening - further nerve damage/irritation?
3. Lightheaded-ness.
4. Confusion/"Zoning Out" (I was driving to work, and I got zoned out and forgot where I was going. This is just an example, I forget what I am doing or supposed to be doing often - this has only started after taking this medication).

On occasion, I forgot to take my medication at all on two occasions, and when I tried to sleep those nights, I couldn’t AT ALL. Is insomnia some kind of withdrawal symptom?

Any information is really appreciated. Please don’t say "call your doctor", because so far she has been completely unhelpful and incredibly hard to get through to. :/

The most commonly reported adverse effects associated with gabapentin are somnolence, dizziness, ataxia, and fatigue. Nystagmus, tremor, diplopia, amblyopia, pharyngitis, rhinitis, dysarthria, nausea and vomiting, weight gain, oedema, dyspepsia, amnesia, weakness, paraesthesia, arthralgia, purpura, leucopenia, anxiety.

Common psychiatric effects include confusion, depression, and nervousness, and, more rarely, hallucinations and psychoses.

A postmarketing surveillance study1 of 3100 patients taking gabapentin identified drowsiness or sedation as the most frequent adverse effect, occurring in about 6.7%. The incidences of other adverse effects were: headache, 3.6%; fatigue, 3.5%; nausea and vomiting, 2.6%; and dizziness, 2.4%.

The main thing when selecting a drug is: Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

    Douglas B Says:

The problem with taking a medicine that works on the cns is that it can do more than just the blocking it’s supposed to, it can end up masking other parts of your life as well. I have been on neurotin for a good many years and I have come to the conclusion it isn’t doing anything for me either. I feel this especially true since I was able to release the muscles that were causing the pain in the first place. Have to keep taking it at this time because I have epilepsy which I also now believe is under control for the first time in my life.
The other thing is that the symptoms you are describing are the same as others have had who have been in terrible pain in their necks and backs. It seems that the pain becomes so intense in the brain that it starts to affect other parts as well, like some roll over affect, and the number one place it goes is the stomach. Once you release the muscles that are causing the pain you should end up being pain free. Here is how to release those muscles:
    Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
    For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath an happening, the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp.
It may be best to do it at least 3 or 4 times a day for the first several days to make sure the muscles stay where you want them to and that they are relaxed so they stay where they are supposed to. Only repeated applications is going to assure you of that.
