Is it harmful to take over the counter sleep medications like Simply Sleep every night?

I’ve struggled with really intense insomnia for a while, and it became even worse when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease and started taking prednisone. I’ve been taking an over the counter medication like Exedrin PM or Simply Sleep every night for like a year, and it seems to be taking increasingly longer to kick in. I have tried herbal remedies like chamomile tea and melanin, but they don’t make a dent in my insomnia. I’ve also tried meditation, yoga, and quite literally like a 100 other things. So is it bad? I’m 17 and underweight and other than HD am fine.

    J C Says:

The active ingredient in many of the OTC sleep medications is diphenhydramine, also known as Benedryl, an antihistamine that happens to cause drowsiness. It’s the only active ingredient in the medication known as "Simply Sleep", while many others contain pain-relievers such as Tylenol or Advil, generally unnecessary for the purpose intended and actually may be unhealthy to take regularly for that reason. But it makes for good marketing and sales.

Since you’ve "tried meditation, yoga, and quite literally like a 100 other things" you really ought to discuss the matter with your doctor.

As for the "Simply Sleep", plain store-brand Benedryl is the same thing, and considerably less expensive. You can take Tylenol, Advil, etc separately if truly needed.
