Wife quit several prescription drugs cold turkey and is losing her mind!!!!?

My wife stopped taking a multitude of prescription drugs cold turkey 2 weeks ago as advised by her doctor. She was taking xanax, fiorocet, and effexor (not positive) on a daily basis along with god knows what else. I found a box slam full of pill bottles so who knows what she was taking and she’s too wacked out to even know now. I had a sort of intervention where i kicked her out and sent her to her parents until she could get her act together. She had gotten to the point where she was slurring her speech in broad daylight but was still 99% there. Well after quitting she spent 3 days vomiting. Then insomnia set in. It’s been 2 weeks and now she is having severe hallucinations, talking really fast, sleeping maybe 2 hours a day, having sleep walking episodes and conversations out loud in her sleep when she does sleep. She is completely disconnected from reality. She confuses things she saw on tv with actual life. I had to spend 5 minutes convincing her I knew nothing about some "party dog" i later found out is something from desperate housewives. Her parents took her to a sleep study and they sent her to the emergency room! (of course the ER said they couldnt help) Now she is at Life Management center where she will be going under a psychiatric evaluation. My question is: Has anyone ever witnessed people act completely and uterly looney bin crazy after stopping drugs? I’m hoping this is something that will wear off after the drugs have purged but it’s so bad I’m starting to worry that I might be a single dad soon.
Thanks for your answers I feel a little better already. To answer some of your speculations: yes, she took zolpidem regularly (ambien right?) and also zanaflex. and no she is not overweight. In fact, she has lost about 40 ounds in the last 6 months and is scary skinny. I busted her with 1000 xanax bars and 100s of fiorocet that she ordered from china. Thats why i gave her the boot. Her doctor is not very respected in the medical community and is known for turning his patients into junkies. She originally went to him for chronic migraines and a few years later was prescribed a multitude of anti-depressants, muscle relaxers, etc. Seemed odd to me that he would suggest cold turkey when everything i read about these drugs warns otherwise.

People can die after this kind of abrupt withdrawal she is very lucky to be alive. Whatever the mental illness was that she was prescribed the medications if it was depression, Bi-Polar or Personality Disorder will automatically become severe along with the physical symptoms of her withdrawal from the drugs. Thank goodness she is getting help, they should be giving her medication to stop the withdrawal symptoms and then they will probably be starting her slowly back onto the medications that she has to have for her mental illness. She needed an emergency room immediately when this started. I hope you will be understanding about her condition and I am certain that she will not stop taking her medications again. This is what happens after abruptly stopping these medications. I wish her the best in her recovery. It sounds as if the worst is over and she will be alright. It will be hard for you for awhile having to take care of your children alone but she will be back to normal.

usually, doctors don’t recommend going cold turkey, they usually advise that their patients should wean there selves off medication slowly.

if its been more than 2 weeks, then i suggest waiting 2 more weeks, if no improvement occurs, then she should either be put back on the medication, see her doctor (maybe a different one this time), or both.

Absolutely that can make a person "looney bin crazy" although I would hold off using terms like that to a forum of mental patients.

All three of those drugs will cause a physical withdrawal or a discontinuation effect. The fiorocet and xanax are serious drugs than send you through hell when you stop taking them. I am not second guessing the doctor but there are risks involved with cold turkey discontinuation of these drugs including serious problems like seizures and sickness that can keep you laid up in bed for days. With those two drugs making you physically ill, you have more problems on top of that because although Effexor is not addictive, it has discontinuation symptoms, one of the most common is being unstable emotionally. It can go on for weeks and there are crackpots who claim these symptoms affected them for years. I think they are full of crap on that one but it can definitely last several weeks. It has physical symptoms too. I had a doctor once who rotated in to the clinic I was at and he felt the withdrawal symptoms I would experience and getting locked up in the mental ward were preferable to the danger he felt I was in from being over medicated and he dropped about 5 of my meds and told me to go to the emergency room if it gets too bad for me to handle. I would have to say that from my experience taking those drugs, the reading I have done and others I have known that what you describe pretty much matches up with the types of symptoms you get from abruptly stopping them, but you would have to get the opinion of a doctor or other qualified mental health professional to get a solid answer.

    It is not that unusual.

Xanax is used to treat moderate to severe anxiety disorders or panic attacks, so not taking that explains the insomnia, talking very fast. If she is taking zolpidem(A sleeping aid) it would cause her to sleep walk and to talk in her sleep.

Fiorocet is use used to treat tension head aches(though not FDA approved for it). It also consists of 40mg of caffeine. If she was taking to much it would cause brain damage and damage to the blood vessels which may be why the doctor said to stop taking it. It is addicting.

Effexor treats anxiety and MDD(major depressive disorder) It is mainly an antidepressant. It was the 6th most prescribed in 2007. It increases heart rate of 4bpm. It can cause vivid and abnormal dreams. It can in rare cases cause hallucinations.

If she is over weight it the medicines she was taking could’ve been stored in fat, and when she doesn’t sleep she will loose weight making the medicine enter her blood stream and into her body; this in turn gives her mabe half of the medicine but not the part that is balances out the bad making her have the side effects of these medicines.

She was also probably very dependent on the drugs and taking that away causes the body to cope with what was lost adding something in. She have permanent brain damage. You should find out why she was taken off of the medication and put two and two together.
