Does anyone have experience with either buspar (buspirone) or esp. xanax?

While I’ve always had anxiety, in the past it was always mostly secondary to my depression and BPD. I’ve mostly kept them in check for months, but all of a sudden, a few weeks ago, I started getting severe anxiety spells- blinding, chronic headaches, nausea, fatigue and insomnia, jitteriness, the whole deal. I’ve asked my parents to put me on an anti-anxiety medication since I can’t go to the psychiatrist. (I’ve always just had antidepressants that overlapped some for anxiety, never a true anxiety med).

They were talking about buspar, which I’ve never heard of. Has anyone ever had this before? From what I read it sounds pretty benign, and my parents (doctors) said it doesn’t usually lead to dependence, but it also sounds like it only works short-term. If my symptoms haven’t gone away in about a month I might have to switch to xanax, but my parents sounded apprehensive about it. Have you ever had any bad experiences with xanax?

Personally I’ve never taken buspar but I know lots of people who have. For those I knwo that have sever anxiety problems (which it sounds like you do) they said it does nothing for them. Most of them stop taking it because it is just another pill and if its not helping than whats the point right?

I have taken xanax. I have moderate anxiety and will occasionally have some bad panic attacks. I had is prescribed PRN (as needed) and would only take it when I was getting pretty anxious, but it did help. It only lasted for about thirty minute though and then the panic would return. I never had any sort of addition problems with it, but from what I understand it is more likely when you take it habitually than on occasion as I did.

One thing I can tell you is that I tried a bunch of things for my anxiety and the only things that worked for me were the ones that can become habit forming, but that is because they are stronger.

Its important to remember that just becuase someone gives you their opinion that does not mean things will be the same for you. All medications, especially psych meds, effect each person differently.

I hope that helped and good luck!
