I think my six year old has insomnia. How can I help him get to sleep naturally?

My six year old brother has recently been having problems falling asleep. Just the other night, he was in bed at 9:00PM, and fell asleep at 12:30, 1:00AM. I asked him tonight what was wrong and why he couldn’t sleep and he said "I don’t know. I just can’t sleep. I want to, but I can’t."

He is not the type to sit and listen to a story or listen to music. Nor will hot milk work, because if I give him that inch he will definitely take a mile.

Right now, he is just sitting watching television and coloring, awake as ever. Part of me thinks he is just fighting sleep like a typical younger child, but what are some ways I can get him to sleep?

I have a 6 year old also that has trouble sleeping. My son is AD HD. He fights sleep all the time until I spoke with his Doc about it. They gave him a Med to help him go to sleep. Jayden calls it his sleeping pill, but it is actually a Antihistamine. Give your son a dose of benedryl, and see if it helps him go to sleep. If so talk to his Doc, and maybe they will give you a script for him.

    Get him up earlier.

Turn the thermostat down a degree or two, or put a fan in his room.

Make sure he gets plenty of exercise during the day.

Isn’t that completely normal? As long as he isn’t missing any school over it, I wouldn’t bother changing anything. He should shed this habit naturally as he gets older. BUT– if it IS a problem, I would send him outside more often. It could be that he doesn’t use much energy during day, especially if he’s just inside watching TV.

My son was like that too for a while. You can have him run off his energy at the end of the day or give him a bath with lavender baby soap, that’s what they do to colicky babies who have trouble sleeping. My son use to say he wasn’t tired when I would tell him it was bed time and then he would run all over to show me he was awake and then 5 minutes later fall asleep in front of the tv lol. It was kind of funny but it got old quick. Just try to play energetic games with him, maybe after dinner? That way it’s closer to night time but not right before bed. And no sugar after a certain time, say 5 that way it’s all out of his system by 9 when you put him to bed. Good luck with this but remember, even if all of the methods you try don’t work, it won’t be like this for long.

I had insomnia from age 6 until around age 18. It took me an average of 2 hours to fall asleep each night. I’m not sure why it went away, I am now a heavy sleeper and fall asleep in seconds.

Anyway, the only thing that worked for me as a kid was progressive relaxation (google it) or some people call it self hypnosis. You can teach your son how to do this. Basically you focus on relaxing every muscle in your body starting from your head and work down. I also visualized my mind as a blank stage or putting all my thoughts in a bottle. I started doing this around 9 or 10, but I think a six year old could learn it. I’ve done it for my kids when they are really wound up and can’t sleep, they love it.
