Singulair: Not a question but a warning?

Dr thinks 2 yr old has allergies which caused her sinus infection. He gave her antibiotics for infection and Singulair for allergies. She was up for 4 days straight, ended up with bronchitis, stated her belly hurt, cried all the time. I missed Singulair for 1 night but still have antibiotics. Why did this happen? I looked online and found so much stuff that I thought I would die. I cried more because I was stupid and gave it to her without completely doing research on it.

I want to warn all parents to be careful with SINGULAIR! It can be dangerous to children. Read below for common side effects:

ore common side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, abnormal dreams, allergic reaction, bronchitis, bruising, cough, dental pain, diarrhea, difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, drowsiness, ear infection, ear pain, eczema, eye inflammation, fatigue, fever, flu, hallucinations, headache, hives, indigestion and other digestive problems, infection, insomnia, irritability, itching,
More Side Effects: laryngitis, leg pain, muscle aches and cramps, nasal congestion, nausea, pancreatitis, pneumonia, rash, restlessness, runny nose, seizures, sinus pain, skin inflammation, sneezing, sore throat, swelling due to fluid retention, swelling of the mouth or throat, upper respiratory infection, tendency to bleed easily, thirst, viral infection, vomiting

And there are many different websites that state the same.
Thanks for letting me know that your child takes it and is fine.

I understand that each child can react differently and I am glad for those who it didn’t bother but just want people to know that the side effects are real.

Just FYI, in relation to your daughter’s sinus infection (if she is still having problems), a huge number of pediatric sinus infections are actually caused by fungus, not bacteria. In fact, giving an antibiotic to treat a fungal sinus infection can just make the fungal growth worse.

So if she is still having trouble, you might want to take her to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist to have it checked out.

Incidentally, any medication has the potential for side effects. The package insert should also tell you the percentage of patients who experienced those problems, which is usually pretty low.

Thanks. But my youngest son takes that and he seem to be doing fine. He takes it at night before going to bed for his asthma and allergies. I haven’t seen any problems..

thanx for the info! that’s scary to know but good to know! are these symptoms for both childrens and adult singulair?

I would have never given my child Singulair. I don’t care if a doctor prescribed it or not. That is a drug primarily used by adults, I would never give it to a 2 year old.

Just because a doctor suggests something, doesn’t mean it right. As an adult, I’ve not filled prescriptions because I’ve felt the doctor misdiagnosed me.

    Better safe than sorry!

Um I’m sorry she had a bad reaction but just because your child had some side effects does not mean it’s a bad medication for allergies. There are risks for taking any medicine, even Tylenol. Everything has possible side effects. Try asking her doctor to prescribe another allergy medicine.

I can’t take Zythromax (an antibiotic) because it upsets my stomach and I have severe diarrhea. That’s just the way my body handles it so I also make it a point to tell my doctor who treats me that Zythromax does not set well with me. But it does great for other people, so should I tell all these other people not to take it based on a side effect I had? No.

If this is the attitude you have on one medicine, maybe you should just ban all medicine from your house…..but that would be insane especially if your child was in pain.

Im sorry your daughter had such a bad reaction to a medication, but all medications carry the risk of side effects. My son cant take antibiotics, I cant have any topical numbing agents or my throat closes up. Did you also look up the side effects to the antibiotics? Point being all meds have side effects, prescrip or otc.

Sorry your child had a bad reaction.

Check out the warnings on virtually any medication, though, and you’ll find similar lists. The idea is that the "common side effects" are either quite uncommon or mild enough to be worth the good the medication does.

My daughter was at the emergency room on a regular basis for severe asthma and had pneumonia twice before she started Singulair. On Singulair and one other medication, she’s a different — way healthier — kid. She does have a side effect … it’s harder for her to fall asleep (which falls under insomnia)). But I’d easily rather have it take her an extra half hour to fall asleep than to worry about her being rushed to the ER a couple times a month to be put on oxygen.

It’s always worth knowing what potential side effects are so you can be on the lookout for them. Sorry they happened to your daughter. But it doesn’t mean that no one should take singulair, or even that it’s any more dangerous than any other medication. My daughter’s actually allergic to penicillin … which can potentially even be fatal. that doesn’t mean that penicillin’s not right for my other kids. These are issues people have to take up with their doctors about what is the right medication for their own individual child.

Every medicine that is made has side effects. My son has been taking singular for about 4 years now and it’s a miracle drug as far as I’m concerned.

It’s the only asthma med that has controlled his asthma. Ever.

If you don’t give your child a medicine because of potential side effects, you’ll never give your child medicine. That’s why when you give medicine to a child you observe them and if they have a reaction you talk to your doctor immediately and stop the med if you can.

Its weird how medicines have more side affects than cures.

    Side effect: Anal Leakage.

Yeah thanks now you moved my leak from my nose to my anus.

My children have been on singulair for 2 years and had no problems it has helped them dramatically and doctors dont give scripts to hurt patients but to help them and on side effects the drug company has to list all complaints that any has had even if one person out of a million experienced vomiting they have to list it as a possible side effect and another thing you have to remember many things online are here say and not published by qualified people and even tylenol or aspirin can have negative effects anything can hurt or endanger somebody its just if your the one in however many

I am very thankful my daughter has had no such side effects. She has been on it for almost two years for asthma and has not touched a steroid, preventer, or ventolin since

Singulair is basicly for people with asthma problems. I been on it for 10 years now and never had a problem. Talk with your doctor if you have any problems.
