Insomnia caused by benzodiazepines withdrawal?

I have been taking lorazepam and prazepam for almost an year because of my anxiety disorder. When I have felt better I decided to take the medications off gradually. I felt some withdrawal symptoms, but not so severe. I had a very stressfull period, so I took for a few days the minimal dose of the same medications. When stoped taking them, insomnia apperas. Namely, I don’t feel stressed or tensed. But when I go to bed, I just can’t fall asleep. Is this because I have stopped taking the medicatons? And please some advice how to get some sleep. I don’t want to take the benzodiazepines again because I don’t have other anxiety symptoms. Sleeping pills do help, but I don’t want to become dependent upon them, too.

Thanx in advance for all answers

Ok, I have been there. Firstly, congratulations on weaning yourself off the benzos and also realizing the potential for dependency an prescription sleeping aids. Insomnia is a common side effect due to coming off benzos. IT WILL GO AWAY! It may take a few days to establish a regular sleep cycle. What helped me the most was avoiding stimulants in the evening. Don’t nap during the day. Make sure you routinely exercise during the day. Take a relaxing bath or shower before bedtime. Drink some decaf cocoa or hot decaf tea to help you relax. Read a good book, magazine etc before bed. Do not watch tv. The most important thing is to be in a relaxed frame of mind prior to bed. When lights are out and after 30 mins, sleep does not come, get out of bed. Find a comfy chair and read, work a puzzle, knit…whatever you do that’s relaxing. When you find yourself sleepy, go back to bed again. Repeat until sleep comes. I know this is very frustrating. I went without sleep for 2 days doing this. By the 3rd night, I was exhausted and was able to sleep. Now I have an established sleep routine. The cycle with benzos/sleeping pills has happened to me 3 times in the last 5 years. You will adjust. Just stick to a routine. Good Luck!
